The mushroom is known by various names such as Cogumelo do sol or medicinel in Brazil, Himematsutake, Agarikusutake, or Kawarihiratake in Japan, and Ji Song Rong in China.
Agaricus originates from Piedade, a small village nestled in the highlands of the Atlantic forest near Tauape, in São Paulo province, Brazil. In 1893, the fungus was initially identified in the United States as Agaricus subrefrescens Peck. Later, in 1947, American taxonomist Dr. Murrill reclassified it and published it under the name Agaricus blazei Murrill. At that time, the Brazilian ‘almond mushroom’ (Agaricus brasiliensis) was already recognized, but no link was made, and they were considered three distinct species.
Detailed studies by researchers Wassermann and Didukh in 2002, along with genome sequence analysis by researcher Kerrigan, revealed that they are the same species. Despite Agaricus subrefrescens Peck being the earliest scientific name, Agaricus blazei Murrill has been more commonly used. Notably, the cultivation of the Brazilian mushroom began with a Japanese mycologist residing in Brazil, leading to its widespread cultivation in many Asian countries since the 1980s.
ABM is a large Agaricus mushroom known for its brownish-gold cap, typically 7 to 12 centimetres wide. It has a rounded, fleshy cap and a short, firm stem [3, 4].

Side Effects
In a study, cancer survivors took 1.8, 3.6, or 5.4 grams of ABM granulated powder daily for six months to assess safety. Out of 78 patients, 9 (12%) experienced adverse effects, primarily digestive issues such as nausea and diarrhoea, and one patient had a liver-related allergic reaction. Can Children Use Medicinal Mushrooms?
Research regarding the use of medicinal mushrooms by children is still at its infancy. There is however an interesting study conducted in 2018 which investigated the effects of Reishi on immune system cells of 3-5 year olds. [52]
The study showed that Reishi increased immune system cell counts in the peripheral blood, which are crucial for defending against infections. The treatments were also well-tolerated and safe, with no abnormal increases in serum creatinine or hepatic aminotransferases. While the study shows promise in the safety and effectiveness of the use of medicinal mushrooms in children, we do always suggest consulting with your child's doctor prior to introducing anything new into their diet.

Which Mushroom Extraction Do You Use?
The optimal extraction method once again depends on the mushroom itself. Different methods are used to promote and dissolve the unique active ingredients in the mushroom extracts and hence create a high spectrum mushroom extract.
The 3 different extraction methods:
1. Alcohol (ethanol)
This extraction is used to draw out the fat-soluble compounds in the mushrooms, such as the adaptogenic terpenoids.
2. Hot water
This extraction is used to extract the water-soluble compounds, the polysaccharides, and the immunomodulating Beta-D-glucans. The dual extraction process ensures you’re getting the full spectrum of compounds when it comes to a potent mushroom extract
3. Dual extraction
Dual extraction refers to a combination of water and alcohol extraction. The dual extraction process ensures you’re getting the full spectrum of compounds when it comes to a mushroom where the active ingredients benefit from both alcohol and well as a water extract.
Hot water extraction works best for:
- Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, Maitake, Tremella, Shiitake and Agaricus Blazei
- Double (alcohol & water) extraction works best for:
- Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga
